A Message from Your Beta Rho President
Welcome to the 2018 - 2020 Biennium!
As you see, I am back!! Because of your faith in my ability to lead and with the help of committed officers and the educational excellence and standing committee members, I am certain that we will have a great biennium. Thank you for this opportunity you have given me again!
In each biennium, there are things that remain the same but there are also things that will change. Change is good when it is purposeful and beneficial. Most importantly, and in keeping with International DKG's commitment to "Simplify DKG", we will be sharing more information online and using the DKG website to access any information concerning state, regional and international issues. Heather Dunn, our webmaster, will be very helpful in a future meeting that will be devoted to that.
While we have been communicating more via the internet, the major change for our chapter is that your binder have be sent to you on line. Thanks to the very hard work of Susan Lee, the pages are informative, concise and well prepared. You may choose to make a hard copy or you can choose to leave everything on line. Members who do not have access to the internet, will be given a hard copy. The member pictorial is a WONDERFUL new addition to the member pages. Thanks to the efforts of Carol Goodman, Heather Dunn and Susan Lee, we will now be able to put a "face" to the name and help each member recognize each other more easily. Be sure to see Carol Goodman this evening if you have not had your picture taken yet.
Also, a special "thank you" to Kathy Fuller who has been so good about sending out communications via the internet so far. Great job!!
In addition, and in keeping with International's theme to "Simplify DKG", I have chosen to use the word Simplify in my theme. My theme for the new biennium is "Simplify your Life". We will focus on YOU this biennium!! We will suggest ways for you to go from:
Interesting and knowledgeable speakers, varied programs and activities concerning this "Mindfulness" theme have been planned. Please look in your binder pages at each meeting so you will know what our program is and who our speakers will be. We have chosen them with great care for the benefit of all our members.
New meeting venues, new membership committee assignments, more opportunities for members to be involved and greater commitment to personal and professional growth in a positive and fun way have been planned for.
There are many state, regional and international events which members can attend and in which members can participate.
The tri-chapter meeting will be held on May 18, 2019 at Shadowbrook golf and resort restaurant in Tunkhannock, PA. This will be an excellent opportunity to meet our state president. In our area, three chapters meet together so that state president, Barbara Gasperini, can visit us. Throughout the state many chapters have combined meetings to make it efficient for president Gasperini to visit all chapters during her biennium. The host will be the Alpha Zeta chapter, our mother chapter. Our responsibility is to provide entertainment and table decorations. Based on a suggestion from Pat Carpenter, whose niece is in the group, we have chosen the Tri State Gospel Singers who are lively, entertaining and excellent. Also Arlene Zeme will chair the creation of table decorations for the event. If you are interested in helping, please contact her.
The North East Regional Conference is in Mashantucket, CT July 30-August 1, 2019. That is so close!! Plan to make the trip!!
Pennsylvania State Convention held in State College, PA in June and is always a wonderful experience and I encourage you to attend.
In 2020, Pennsylvania will host the International DKG Convention and will be assisted by New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, and District of Columbia chapters. It will be held in Philadelphia, PA! There are a variety of ways in which our chapter can participate and please join several of us and fill out the participation form to do that and return it to Dr. Lyn Schmid as soon as possible. This is your chance to be a very important part of this exciting and enriching international event.
The character of International DKG Convention is changing as there are so many states which cannot accommodate the great number of participants and do not have the membership numbers to host the event, so we may not have this opportunity again. The Fall Keystonian had a wonderful review of the most recent international convention in Austin, Texas which will give you an idea of an event with 2,000 international members present. Imagine it!!!
Please remember that our chapter supports each member who attends events beyond the chapter by offering her $100.00 annually. That is helpful when planning your attendance. See Sheri Wolfe for a reimbursement form.
In addition, on the chapter level, we will be revisiting our chapter Strategic Action Plan to see if we have accomplished what we hoped in the last biennium and to also help us plan for this biennium. Cindy Reynolds and Lan Shaffmaster will lead us in revising the plan.
Chapter standing rules have been revised and based on suggestions from Louann Shrader, State Rules Chairman, we have a concise document to be adopted this evening. The rules have been emailed to you so you could review prior to approval.
I cannot forget the wonderful opportunities for community and school involvement that our chapter affords its members. Collection of school supplies for the SEE baskets, collection of pasta and spaghetti sauce for the summer lunch box program, collection of personal care items for women' resource center fill a purse project, filling a book bag with personal items for children of crisis at the women's resource center, and contributing books for libraries are a few of our projects. Many of these projects will continue. Pat Arnold will tell you about our December project. Please take part!
We have planned a biennium that will be fun, interesting, varied, educational, productive and busy. Please attend chapter meetings. There are only four each year!! Become involved and active on the chapter, state and international levels. Suggest names for potential members. Bring them to a meeting!
And we are confident, that despite how busy you are in home, community and career activities, you WILL learn to "Simplify your Life"!!
Thank you!!
