PHOTO CAPTION: Jane Helman was a teacher and coach in the Tunkhannock Area School District as well as a very active member and president of the Keystone State Reading Association now known as Keystone State Literacy Association Northeast PA. She served as the state president of KSLA. In her memory, the local chapter has built, painted and registered a Little Free Library in her name which is installed on the campus of Marywood University in Scranton. The lighthouse “Read and Shine” was Jane’s logo when she served at the state level. The logo appears on three sides of the library and a circular medallion with her photo and the words “In Memory of Jane Helman” is over the door on the front.

Little Free Library Tribute
To Jane Helman How does one recognize, celebrate, pay tribute to and memorialize a person whose life gave so much? The chapter of the Keystone State Literacy Association Northeast PA had a very active member for years who gave as a teacher, a coach, a professor, a member and a friend. She served as a chapter president and then a Keystone State Literacy Association state president a few years ago but suddenly was no longer with us. Jane Helman died suddenly from a heart attack at the age of 67 while working with her co-teacher and dearest friend, Hollie D’Agata, on plans for the course they taught at Marywood University in Scranton, PA. She was gone and who knew what else she would have done in the years to come had she had the opportunity. |
